emerged as Africa’s leading netballing nation, unseating South Africa. The
She Cranes clinched a thrilling victory of 49-47 against the Proteas on Sunday,
securing their place as the top-ranked African team. This victory was met
with exuberant celebration from Ugandan fans, players, and coaches, who
flooded social media with well-deserved praises. What made this win even
sweeter was the fact that it came against the hosts, who had beaten Uganda
earlier in the week with a score of 52-50.
This marked a historic achievement for the She Cranes, as it was their
best-ever finish at a World Cup. In previous editions, they had ranked seventh
(2019 in England), eighth (2015 in Australia), and 13th (1979 in Trinidad and To-
bago). Notably, this wasn’t the first time Uganda triumphed over South Africa
in a major tournament. They achieved a similar feat in 2022 during the Com-
monwealth Games in Birmingham when they secured victory in the playoff
for the 5th/6th position.
Upon their return to Uganda, the She Cranes received a hero’s welcome.
They were greeted at Entebbe International Airport with wild cheers, drum-
ming, traditional dances, and vuvuzelas. The team was led by Minister Joyce
Kaduchu, Uganda Netball Federation Trustees, Acting President Brigadier Fla-
via Byekwaso, Elected President Hon Sarah Babirye Kityo, and other officials.
At a VIP reception and press briefing, the players and officials were lauded
for their remarkable achievement. They were also treated to an official wel-
come dinner at the lavish Serena Hotel in Kampala. The evening featured
speeches from government officials, captain Irene Eyaru, other players, head
coach Fred Mugerwa, and officials from the Uganda Netball Federation.
On the international stage, Uganda’s netball stars continue to shine. Hanisha
Muhameed has joined Bartercard Surrey Storm Netball Club in the United
Kingdom’s Superleague, following the team’s announcement on September 7,
2023.
Moreover, Uganda Airlines stepped up as the official Airline partner for the
Uganda Netball female national team, the She Cranes, ahead of the tourna-
ment in South Africa. This partnership included return air tickets and finan-
cial support of Ush56,340,000 (approximately $15,352.95). Uganda Airlines
CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki made the official announcement, expressing the
airline’s commitment to supporting the team and helping them fly the nation-
al flag even higher. The She Cranes’ remarkable journey at the Netball World
Cup has not only left world in awe but has also illuminated Uganda’s path to
netball glory.
