THEY CAME IN OUTRIGGER CANOES not knowing what lay ahead. Steering
by sun, moon, and stars, they arrived in these far-flung islands and developed cultures that continue to
astound. Fijians who walk on fire. Huahine’s stone fish traps still in use after hundreds of years. They
pushed on further still — to remote islands in the Tuamotus where copra and pearl farming are still a
way of life, to Rarotonga, the source of Maori culture, and to Tonga, known for its friendly hospitality
and its rich cultural inheritance. Feel the tingle of kava on your lips and realize these cultures are so
much deeper and richer than you ever imagined.
