IRRIGATION FEATURE
(formerly Grahamstown) feeds five towns
and 80 000 people. One borehole gives
up to 800 000 litres a day. There are 17
boreholes in Clarens, where the water
is plentiful and clean because there is
no pollution. Oom Gideon sited all the
boreholes in the Golden Gate National
Park nearby and they supply almost two
million litres a day.
Attitude change
Water security and South Africans’ attitude
to its use and conservation, must change.
Says Groenewald: “We will absolutely have
to accept that water is not a given. Firstly,
you cannot be certain you will have water
tomorrow morning. Secondly, never waste
water. Thirdly, look after your waste water
so it doesn’t pollute the clean water that
is left over.
Something else I have noticed: if the shouldn’t drill new ones because there are or greedy with it. We have to look after
Boeings flying between Joburg and Cape millions of them in Africa. My suggestion it, be stringent in our use because the
Town do not leave a vapor trail, there is no is that we rehabilitate all of them before groundwater only fills up once in 100
moisture in the upper atmosphere. For the we embark on new ones, unless it’s in a years. We have to watch the Vaal Dam. As
last four years, no Boeing or any jet has left community that has no boreholes or if the it goes down, so the groundwater is being
any trail. borehole is in such a state that it is falling emptied. This is the situation we are in.” LSA
apart.
The only drinkable water we have now
is either stored in our dams or is sitting “There is more than enough water stored Information supplied by
underground. We will have to begin underground to sustain the population for JoJo. The views are those of
cleaning all existing boreholes. We hundreds of years. We can’t be wasteful Dr.Gideon Groenewald.
